KEENE, NH – Storms that rolled through the Monadnock Region Sunday afternoon and evening left their fair share of damage behind.

Areas that were the hardest hit include Swanzey and Winchester.

In Swanzey, police and town officials have asked drivers to stay off the roads as all units were tied up and not able to check on all roads across town. Late Sunday night the town reiterated that warning and said if roads weren’t passable before, they most likely still aren’t safe as the rain continued overnight and into Monday morning.

The town will release more information today as crews are able to assess the damage and continue repairs. As of Sunday evening sections of Route 32 through Swanzey remained closed, along with East Shore Road, Swanzey Lake Road, Holbrook Avenue, and a section of the Rail Trail through Westport. Some homes around Swanzey Lake were reportedly evacuated as well.

In Winchester, Route 10 at Kapper Drive and Forest Lake Road remain closed with extensive damage and flooding there. It was reported early Monday morning that the dam on Forest Lake had let go.

Emergency officials in Winchester are continuing to monitor the roads and say any resident that will be impacted by storm damage will be notified directly.

Elsewhere in the region, extensive damage was reported in Stoddard where fire & rescue officials say Kings Highway, Shedd Hill, and North Shore and Aten roads at Granite Lake are closed. In Nelson, Nelson Road between Henderson Road and the Center of Town, and Old Stoddard Road are closed.

Keene Public Works Director Kort Blomquist told WKBK Sunday evening that there was no damage to report in the city, but he did say he believes there may have been a microburst in Swanzey.

Rain is expected to continue Monday and possibly Tuesday, which could mean more damage to already vulnerable areas. Authorities are reminding drivers to “turn around, don’t drown,” as it’s, in most cases, impossible to know the condition of the road under the water.

WKBK Staff Meteorologist Pat Pagano says some areas could see an additional 1-2 inches of rain Monday. He’s predicting rain will end Tuesday morning.

According to the Eversource Outage Map Sunday evening, upwards of 700 or so people were without power at one point during the storms. The majority of those have been restored.
